Miscanthus is recognised as an extremely vigorous energy crop. It is a perennial grass that grows up to 4m in height. The crop is propagated from rhizomes and once established, yields for over 20 years, without replanting.

Miscanthus requires a good quality seedbed similar to that for growing maize. Planting takes place in April and early May and the rhizomes are planted using bespoke planters. The crop appears to do well in most soils. Weed control prior to planting and in the first two years is essential. After year two the crop forms a canopy and there is no further need for weed treatment. The plant has little or no requirement for fertiliser. Cutting is carried out with existing farm equipment usually a mower conditioner and then baled with a big square baler.
Harvesting

John Amos Energy Ltd has been involved in studies undertaken by Cardiff University to investigate the environmental profile of energy crops. The studies suggest that the growing of energy crops had immediate benefits for biodiversity.
