 BIOMASS LAUNCH CREATES INTEREST

Local Land Agents and Surveyors, John Amos & Co are pleased to report a huge crowd at the recent Open Evening to discuss the possibilities of the formation of a Farmers Co-Operative to supply biomass to the proposed new pellet plant at Presteigne, Powys.

The meeting room at The Luctonians Sports Club held on Wednesday last, 18th February was overflowing with attendees. Over 100 farmers and woodland owners and other interested parties were present. John Westmacott, Managing Director of LandEnergy, London the promoters of the site, gave a presentation explaining how the Presteigne project might work and the kind of fuel stocks that it would require, pointing out that something towards 135,000 tonnes per annum would be needed for the pelleting plant.

John Amos then outlined how a Farmers Co-Operative could work and explained the fuel types that would be considered including woodland timber, thinnings and residues; energy crops including miscanthus, short rotation coppice, willow and poplar; and orchard prunings.

Richard Jackson from 7Y explained to the meeting how the logistics of such an operation might work.

Following the meeting on the night, there was huge interest and many of the attendees completed Expressions of Interest forms showing a wish to supply biomass to the site, subject to contract.

Expressions of Interest are continuing to come into the offices of John Amos & Co and the Company would be delighted to send out forms or provide further information to anyone unable to attend the meeting. Interested parties are welcome to contact John Amos & Co on 01568 610007 or email enquiries@johnamos.co.uk for further information.

Following the meeting John Amos said “we were delighted to see so many people turn out, the numbers simply overwhelmed us at the meeting and it just shows that farmers and growers in Herefordshire, Mid Wales and surrounding counties are keen to have alternative markets for their product and they are also keen to work together in a Farmers Co-Operative to gain maximum value.”

A further meeting of interested parties is likely to be scheduled in March to take the project further forward.
